Sri Lankan Couple Faces Flak For Making 250 School Kids Carry The Bride's 3.2-Km Long Saree
A Sri Lankan Couple is in the News for using 250 School Kids for carrying the Bride's ridiculously long Saree during their extravagant Wedding Ceremony.
According to an AFP report, 250 students of a state-owned school carriedthe train of the 3.2-kilometre (two-mile) long Saree worn by the Bride.The Bride and the Bridegroom walked down the main road in the centraldistrict of Kandy on Thursday.
The report also states that 100 studentsserved as flower girls at the Wedding Ceremony.The students were from a school named after the provincial chief ministerSarath Ekanayaka, who was a special guest at the wedding.
The National Child Protection Authority said it was investigating theincident.“We have started an investigation,” said the NCPA chairman, Marini deLivera. “We are going all out because we don’t want this to become a trend.”
De Livera said deploying the students for such Wedding Ceremonies duringthe school hours was against the law, and violators could face up to 10years in jail in the prison.
“What they [the wedding party] did is a violation of child rights,” DeLivera said. “Depriving the children of education, risking their securityand harming their dignity are criminal offenses.”
